Press Release: IMF Selects Ahluwalia As Director Of New Evaluation Office

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has decided to offer Mr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia of India the position of Director of the IMF's independent Evaluation Office (EVO).

Mr. Ahluwalia is a Member of the Indian Planning Commission, and of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India. He was Finance Secretary at the Ministry of Finance of India between 1993 and 1998, and has held a range of senior policy positions within the Indian government. Mr. Ahluwalia, a prominent economist who has written and spoken extensively on national and international economic issues, also worked previously at the World Bank. He studied at St. Stephen's College, Delhi, and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University.

The IMF's Executive Board agreed on April 10, 2000, that the EVO would be established (see Press Release No. 00/27). The EVO will be independent from IMF Management and Staff. The Director of EVO will report regularly to the Executive Board on findings of the unit.
