Press Release: IMF Deputy Managing Director Kato to Visit Uganda and Botswana

September 18, 2007

Press Release No. 07/194

Mr. Takatoshi Kato, Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), will travel to Uganda (September 22-25), and Botswana (September 25-27) to meet with top political leaders and senior officials. In both countries, Mr. Kato will participate in high-level workshops on the challenges and opportunities for economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Kampala workshop will bring together economic policy makers from the member countries of the East African Community.

In the course of these seminars, and in meetings with government officials, civil society, the private sector, and academia, Mr. Kato will exchange perspectives on critical issues facing Africa, and reinforce the IMF's continued commitment and close policy dialogue with African countries. He will underscore the importance of sustaining sound macroeconomic conditions, and of keeping much focus on private sector-led development and on the need for countries to pay special attention to investment financing. The visits will also give him the opportunity to hear directly from these various interlocutors on how they feel the IMF can best assist their countries in their efforts for further growth and development.
