The IMF Resident Office in Kathmandu is one of the oldest maintained by the Fund, having been opened in 1977. The primary functions of the office are to facilitate the flow of information between the Government of Nepal, the Nepal Rastra Bank, and the IMF and provide economic advice to the Nepalese authorities. The office is also available to clarify IMF policy and procedures to the Government of Nepal, the Nepali public and media, as well as to disseminate IMF publications. The office also works closely with other donor agencies in Nepal. The office arranges IMF mission visits and assists Nepali candidates nominated for IMF training programs.

The office consists of one staff member from IMF headquarters in Washington and four seconded staff from the Nepal Rastra Bank. The current resident representative is Alexander Pitt, a German national, who has been the representative since August 2006. Seconded staff are Ramu Poudel, economist, and Deepa Bhattarai, senior administrative assistant. Other seconded staff are a driver (Mr. Magar) and an office assistant (Mr. Upadhyay).
