The International Monetary Fund (IMF), worried that economic gains in Africa will slip away because of the global downturn, is pressing advanced countries to honor, and even scale up, aid commitments and called for a revival of stalled world trade negotiations.

Prices were stable in February 2009. 12 month headline and average inflation rates reached 4.4 and 9.2 percent respectively. Average inflation in 2009 is at about the same level as in 2008 (9.1 percent) while the headline inflation is substantially lower (4.4 versus 13.1 percent in 2008). Positive price movements of 0.2 percent in tomatoes were offset with the same price reduction in gasoline.

After relatively low inflation between October and December 2008 Maputo ended the year with a head line inflation of 6.2 percent (against 10.3 percent in December 2007) and an average inflation of 10.3 percent (against 8.2 percent in December 2007)—or lower than what had been projected under the IMF program review.
