Headquarters Facilities and Services

Joint Bank-Fund Library System
The IMF and the World Bank share a first-rate library system, the Joint Bank-Fund Library. Books, papers, and journals covering a wide range of economic, development and political topics are readily available. The library staff can assist with on-line bibliographic computer searches, incorporating the latest resources available through the Internet and the World Wide Web, as well as inter-library loans.

Information Technology
The IMF's information technology department supports computing services within the organization including personal, departmental, and organization wide applications running on PCs, servers, and mainframes. A wide range of software, networked PCs, and extensive computer training facilities are also available to staff.

Support for IMF Families
The International Families of the Fund Office (InFFO) provides a wide range of information and assistance to the spouses and families of staff members. It welcomes families of new staff and helps them settle in to life in Washington. It has an office on the IMF premises and organizes a variety of activities for spouses, including English language classes.

Child Care and Elder Care
The Dependent Care Resource Center (run jointly by the World Bank and IMF) offers information, and personal consultation and referrals, to staff members and their families who are concerned about providing proper care and for elder relatives or young children. The Elder Care section can give advice on such questions as housing alternatives for the elderly, health and nutrition services, financial planning, and ways of providing care for older relatives living outside the United States. The Child Care section deals with matters such as the selection of emergency child care, child care centers, and nanny and au pair agencies.

Career Assistance for Spouses
Married staff recruited from outside the United States are sometimes concerned how their spouse will adapt to living and working in Washington. The World Bank and IMF jointly operate the Family Career Transition Program whose experienced career counselors are ready to offer advice and personal support to help spouses make the transition. They assist spouses to clarify their career goals; to assess their interests, skills and qualifications in relation to the opportunities that are available in Washington; and to write resumes and prepare for interviews. You do not have to wait until you reach Washington to make use of the Program’s services. Once you have a job offer from the IMF, your spouse is encouraged to contact and consult one of the Program's career counselors.

Fitness Center and Outdoor Recreation Center
The IMF maintains an on-site exercise center for use by staff members (there is a modest membership fee). The facility includes equipment for cardiovascular fitness and weight training, courts for squash and racquetball, two studios for exercise classes, together with well equipped changing rooms. The Center's staff can assist members with fitness assessments and exercise consultations.
The IMF also has its own outdoor sports center located in nearby Potomac, Maryland, which staff and their families may join (there is a membership fee which varies depending on the facilities used). The center has facilities for golf, swimming, tennis, soccer, volleyball, and basketball.

Banking Services
The Bank-Fund Staff Federal Credit Union provides on-site banking services for members. Since its establishment in 1947, it has grown to be one of the most financially sound credit unions in the United States. These services include standard checking and savings facilities, automated teller machines, electronic banking, credit card services, complete foreign exchange services, lines of credit, and an array of loans and mortgages.

Travel Services
IMF headquarters has an on-site travel services office operated by American Express. Assistance with the renewal of passports and visas is also provided.

Health Care Facilities
The Bank-Fund Health Services Department, which is located close to the IMF in the World Bank headquarters, provides travel health information, immunizations, and medicines for official travel. It also provides medical attention for minor health problems. The IMF operates a small satellite health room its own premises.

Cafeteria
The IMF has a staff cafeteria that provides at reasonable cost an international menu for breakfast and lunch as well as morning and afternoon tea or coffee. A full-service restaurant, the Executive Dining Room, and a bistro/coffee bar are also available to the staff.

Staff can park their cars in the IMF Headquarters building or at nearby sites at rates which compare favorably to local commercial garages. However, the IMF encourages staff to use car and van pooling arrangements for commuting, as well as the local metro and bus system.

Clubs and Activities
The IMF staff organizes a variety of social, sports, volunteer, and religious clubs which meet on and off the IMF premises. For example, these clubs include an Arts Society, Literary Reading Club, Jazz Society, Muslim Staff Society, Spanish Bible Study, and Fishing, Ski and Soccer Clubs.
