Content and structure
Scope and content: Series contains general administrative files created by the African Department Immediate Office regarding IMF policies and procedures, as well as the Department's internal organization and management. Files consist of: internal memoranda circulated both within AFR and to different departments; cables and letters from member governments, central banks, resident representatives or technical assistants regarding technical assistance, mission schedules, or a series of Seminars for Senior Officials from the African Region held by the IMF; draft tables for the Secretary's Circular indicating overseas assignments by country; and Board papers on administrative matters. Budget files consist of internal memoranda between the Department and the Director of Administration with budget estimates and supporting data on the number of staff positions, workload and number of missions conducted by the Department. Technical assistance files contain copies of correspondence between members, technical assistants and the IMF which in large part duplicate records found in the AFRAI Country Files and AFRAI Technical Assistance Files series. However, the files in the AFRAI Administrative Files series also include records on policy, procedural or administrative matters such as supplies, travel, leave accounting, hardship designation, and the expiration, extension and renewal of resident representative or technical assistant terms. Files on the African Department's Assignments and Functions indicate country desk and secretarial assignments and include drafts of AFR submissions to the IMF publication Functions and Organizations of the Staff. Personnel files include correspondence regarding recruitment under the Special Appointee Program and internal memoranda and draft guidelines regarding secretarial mission travel.
Conditions of Access and Use
Conditions governing access and reproduction: Series is open according to the Archives Access Policy. Files will be screened by reference staff for any time restrictions.
Finding aids: Box 9 File 2 Gen - Records Survey 1977 indicates, sometimes to the file title level, what records the entire African Department was keeping at the time of the survey. Records may not have been kept or may have been reorganized over time, but the file does provide a useful snapshot of the records in 1977.

Related units of description: Technical Assistance files in this series capture administrative matters; AFRAI Country Files and AFRAI Technical Assistance files contain more complete documentation of Technical Assistance function in African member countries. However, Technical Assistance series in CBS and FAD records most likely have the most complete documentation.
