Context
Name of Creator: Humphreys, Norman Kenneth
Administrative/Biographical history: Norman Kenneth Humphreys, a national of the United Kingdom, joined the IMF in 1964 as an Information Officer in the Office of the Managing Director. He was promoted to Chief Information Officer before he joined the Editorial Staff as an Editor in 1966. Later in 1966, the Editorial Staff office was transferred to the Secretary's Department. In 1974, Humphreys was promoted to Chief Editor and he remained in this post until his retirement. The editorial function was transferred back to the Office of the Managing Director in 1980, as part of the newly created Office of External Affairs (OER), which in turn later became the External Relations Department (EXR) in 1981. Humphreys was made head of the Editorial Division (EXREM) at this time, but was later transferred to the EXR Immediate Office in 1982. Humphreys served as Acting Director of EXR in October-November 1985 while other senior staff worked in Seoul for the Annual Meeting. He retired in 1986 but returned to the IMF from 1990-1991 to act as a consultant.
Content and structure
Scope and content: Series consists of chronological files maintained by Norman K. Humphreys from 1982 to 1985 when he was Chief Editor within the External Relations Department Immediate Office. Files mainly contain memoranda, correspondence, minutes and cables written by Humphreys and directed to recipients both within and outside the IMF. Occasionally the original letters which prompted a response from Humphreys are filed with the response. The records pertain to Humphreys responsibilities regarding: the publication budget; translation and promotion requirements for IMF publications; permission to reproduce IMF publications; IMF copyright; and, the selection of papers for IMF publications. There are also records relating to Humphreys role as Chairman or Member of the Bretton Woods Recreation Center Board of Directors. Files are arranged chronologically by year and documents within each file are arranged in reverse chronological order.
