IMF Archives: Finding Aids
External Relations Department Records
External Relations Department Immediate Office Records
EXRAI Management Correspondence Files
Date(s): 1982-1986 |
Content and structure
Scope and content: Series consists of files created as External Relations Department Immediate Office (EXRAI) provided services to management by drafting replies for signature or responding on their behalf to correspondence. The correspondence in general is comprised of requests and responses for general information on the work of the IMF. Correspondents include private individuals, academics, members of the press, non-governmental organizations, conference organizers, religious organizations, representatives of member governments, and various other groups. Records include: letters, memoranda, cables, papers, newsletters, articles, notes, and conference materials, such as pamphlets, statements, speeches and addresses. Files are arranged in roughly alphabetical and then chronological order. Responsibility for this activity was transferred in 1989 to the newly created External Relations Department Public Affairs Division (EXRPU). Files from 1986 onwards can be found in the EXRPU Subject Files series.
Appraisal, destruction and scheduling information: The majority of External Relations Department (EXR) files for services provided for management were destroyed because they duplicated material already found in the Office of the Managing Director. For example, files for regrets and acceptances to invitations were duplicated. Other files found to have no long-term value and destroyed based on past practice include: No Reply files with letters sent for the IMF's information or from persistent correspondents whose interests were not IMF business; requests for financial assistance from private individuals or groups; and, requests for information with routine responses.
