Name of Creator: External Relations Department Immediate Office
Administrative/Biographical history: The External Relations Department Immediate Office (EXRAI), created at the same time as the External Relations Department (EXR) in 1981, oversees IMF interactions with the public and advises management on all aspects of internal and external communications. Its major responsibilities, beyond departmental administration and review of the work of EXR divisions, include: planning and coordinating the IMF's internal and external communications strategy; participating in occasions of contact between the IMF and the public such as, for example, the regular press briefings for journalists hosted by EXR's Director; maintaining contact with editorial boards of major newspapers; addressing other groups such as, for example, legislative, business, labor or academic groups; coordinating review of material prepared by other departments; and, planning and coordinating the IMF's publications program, including chairing the Publications Committee and participating in the Executive Board's Committee on the Annual Report. The Immediate Office has also been responsible for coordinating and producing speeches for management and providing media training for resident representatives and senior staff from other departments.
Content and structure
Scope and content: Sous-fonds contains records created and maintained by the External Relations Department Immediate Office (EXRAI) in the course of its activities of advising management on all aspects of external and internal communications, as well as overseeing IMF interactions with the public and the work of the External Relations Department divisions. The records are arranged into seven series: EXRAI Administrative Files; EXRAI Chief Editor Norman K. Humphreys Chronological Files; EXRAI Deputy Director Charles S. Gardner Chronological Files; EXRAI Director Azizali F. Mohammed Chronological Files; EXRAI International Organizations Files; EXRAI Management Correspondence Files; and, EXRAI Subject Files.
