Context
Name of Creator: External Relations Department Current Publications Division
Administrative/Biographical history: The Current Publications Division (EXRCH) was one of the original divisions at the creation of the External Relations Department (EXR) in 1981, though responsibility for the IMF Survey had previously been vested in the Office of External Relations in 1980, EXR's direct predecessor within the Office of the Managing Director. The Division at its inception was responsible for: producing twice monthly the IMF Survey, which informs the public of the IMF's activities within the broader context of the international economy and with emphasis on individual economies; producing monthly IMF Memorandum which provided information on international economic developments and the activities of the IMF for the press; producing leaflets and brochures on the IMF and material for staff members making speeches; and, preparing Staff News, an internal periodical for staff on both operational and personal topics. The Division's activities remained relatively constant until 1997, when the Finance and Development Office was integrated and the Division became responsible for editing and producing the journal. The IMF also stopped publishing IMF Memorandum that year. Responsibility for creating Staff News was later transferred from the Division in 2003 when EXR created an Internal Communications Section to work with the Internal Communications Group. In 2007, in recognition of the shift towards web-based communications in addition to print publication, EXRCH was renamed the Current Communications Division (EXRCC). Heads of EXRCH were Division Chiefs and Chief Editors of IMF Survey: Pierre de Fontnouvelle, 1981-1984; Ronald A. Krieger, 1984-1986; Alexander Mountford, 1986-1989; Gerald R. Rosen, 1990-1993; David M. Cheney, 1993-1997; Ian S. McDonald, 1998-2001; and Laura Wallace, 2001-present.
