Context

Name of Creator: Training Committee

Administrative/Biographical history: In June 1949, the Training Program Committee appointed by the Managing Director recommended the institution of a training program for nationals of member countries to be offered by the International Monetary Fund. The one-year program consisted of two facets. The first was a general program covering the broad aspects of international economics (including techniques for collecting and analyzing economic data and to improve knowledge of the policies, functions and methods of operation of the Fund); and the second, a specialized program in balance of payments techniques. The purpose of the training program was to "help meet the world-wide demand for competent staff in these fields, to promote closer working relationships between the IMF and its members", and "as a by-product, provide a reservoir of training personnel" from which the IMF might draw staff. The first specialized program, attended by five nominated trainees, commenced on September 18, 1950 while the first general course began on January 15, 1951.

Based on the initial recommendations of the Training Program Committee (or the Preparatory Committee as it was informally known in 1949), a regular Training Committee was established to supervise the direction and administration of the training program including the selection of trainees, preparation of a course schedule, and the authorization of program expenditures. The Director of Personnel, an ex officio member of the Committee, was directly responsible for all administrative arrangements. Chairmen of the Training Committee included: R. Horne (1950-1953), J. Gold (1953-1954), A.G.B. Fisher (1954-1960), and F.C. Dirks (1961-1963).
