Content and structure
Scope and content: The Immediate Office of the Research Department was responsible for performing independent work on major policy issues and for supervising and coordinating the work of the Department's other divisions. Research Department Immediate Office materials are organized into series for Department Directors, Deputy Directors, and Advisors. Series include: Director E. Bernstein Subject Files; Director J. Polak Subject Files and Chronological Files; Deputy Director A. Crockett Subject Files and Chronological Files; Deputy Director R. Rhomberg Subject and Chronological Files; Advisor M. Goldstein Subject Files; Advisor M. Dooley Subject Files, Country Files, and Chronological Files; and Advisor J. Williamson Subject Files. Files for Director William Hood were not received by the Archives, and are therefore not available for research. Also, files of Deputy Directors from the 1940s and 1950s have not been received by the Archives. Materials from the 1940s through the 1960s have most likely been incorporated into the Central Files Collection or the early records of the newly created area departments.
Appraisal, destruction and scheduling information: Several Immediate Office files were discarded because they contained either documents that were not relevant to the work of the staff member, or they contained personal information. Most destroyed files were from M. Goldstein's subject files: "IMF Staff-Personal" (contains information about Goldstein's performance at the Fund); No Title (contains notes and CVs from interviews of potential staff members); "Perf[ormance] Reports;" and "Treasury Applications Staff." Also destroyed was "Dooley Personal File, May 1985," from M. Dooley Subject Files series.
Under the Policy on Access to the IMF's Archives only archival materials that are 20 years old or older are open to researchers.
For re-use of digital archival documents where available, it is the responsibility of the individual to obtain permission from the copyright owner.
