Context

Name of Creator: Technology and General Services Department

Administrative/Biographical history: The Technology and General Services Department (TGS) was created on July 1, 1999 to consolidate Fund service-oriented functions. As of 2006, the Technology and General Services Department provided information services, facilities services, general administrative services, language services, and security and business continuity services and consisted of an Immediate Office and four other offices: (1) Administrative Services, (2) Language Services, (3) Technology Services, and (4) Strategic Management and Budget. These offices further supported the IMF by providing meeting and hospitality services; procurement, travel, communications, and shipping services; maintenance and supervision of IMF property; maintenance of the official records of the IMF including an archives and records management component; library, language, and information technology services; and security and publications services.

The Technology and General Services Department was created, along with the Human Resources Department (HRD), from the merging of the following departments: Bureau of Language Services (BLS), Bureau of Computing Services (BCS), Administration Department (ADM), and parts of the Secretary's Department (SEC). As part of the merger in 1999, TGS incorporated the Bureau of Language Services and the Bureau of Computing Services; the Administrative Services Division and Joint Library from the Administration Department; and the Communications Division, Records Division, and Documents Section of the Secretary's Department. The Human Resources Department would maintain the personnel functions of the Administration Department. Directors of TGS have included: 1999-2005: Brian C. Stuart; 2006-present: Frank Harnischfeger.
