Statement by the Managing Director of the IMF on the Passing of Mr. André Telting, Governor of the Central Bank of Suriname.

Press Release No. 10/312
August 7, 2010

“It is with great shock and sadness that we have learnt of the sudden death of Governor André Telting, who also served as Alternate Governor on the Fund’s Board of Governors.

During his long and illustrious career, and particularly over the past ten years as Governor of the Central Bank of Suriname, Mr. Telting was a staunch guardian of central bank autonomy and a trusted member of the economic leadership of Suriname. He succeeded in stabilizing the economy and significantly reducing inflation down to single digits through sound and prudent monetary policies. Governor Telting fought for, and ably achieved, price stability in Suriname, always with the interest of the common man and woman in mind, who suffer most under the evils of inflation

I extend the Fund’s heartfelt condolences to Governor Telting’s family and to the Surinamese people. He will be greatly missed.”
