Press Release No. 13/485
December 3, 2013

Ms. Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), today made the following statement in Phnom Penh at the conclusion of her visit to Cambodia:

“It has been a great pleasure to be back in Asia and visit Cambodia for the first time as Managing Director of the IMF. I had the privilege of having a Royal Audience with King Sihamoni, and meeting with Prime Minister Hun Sen, Deputy Prime Minister Keat Chhon and Minister of Economy and Finance Aun Pornmoniroth. I also had very productive discussions with National Bank of Cambodia Governor Chea Chanto, who showed very warm hospitality to us, and with other senior officials.

“Developing Asia is driving an unprecedented shift of economic power in an increasingly interconnected global economy. The frontier economy of Cambodia is on its way to becoming a dynamic emerging market.

“Cambodia has navigated the world of interconnections well, thanks to its openness, sound macroeconomic policies and management, and increasing regional integration, including through the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

“To ensure Cambodia’s momentum towards progress and the rise of its middle class, I see three priorities—greater investment in education and jobs, ensuring that growth is inclusive, and that Cambodia participates in the prosperity of the region through a sustained commitment to openness and economic cooperation. The authorities are aware of these challenges and reiterated their commitment to maintaining macroeconomic and financial stability.

“I was encouraged by the optimism, drive and dedication of the Cambodian people, including the women, entrepreneurs and youth that I met over the past two days, and at the Royal School of Administration where I spoke to the students about consolidating the dynamic and inclusive Cambodian economy of tomorrow.

“In my meetings with the authorities, we also exchanged views on how the Fund can further support Cambodia and other Asian countries’ endeavor in building lasting growth and shared prosperity.

“I would like to express my deep gratitude and sincere appreciation to the Cambodian authorities and people for their gracious hospitality.”
