The International Monetary Fund (IMF)’s East African Regional Technical Assistance Center (East AFRITAC) held a regional training workshop on the development and improvement of quarterly national accounts statistics in Entebbe, Uganda on February 3-7, 2014. Twenty-seven officials from national statistical agencies, representing six countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda) participated.
The workshop included presentations on various aspects of GDP benchmarking; selection of prices, value and volume indicators to be used in compiling GDP estimates; main issues relating to seasonal adjustment and trend estimation; and related benchmarking and seasonal adjustment software. The workshop also included practical sessions where participants worked in country teams to develop estimates using their own benchmark, indicator, and prices data. Benchmarking and seasonal adjustment software were demonstrated and used in developing quarterly GDP estimates.
Participants provided very positive feedback on the mix of lectures and exercises for improving their understanding of good data collection, compilation and data quality assurance practices. It is expected that the skills learned will contribute significantly to the considerable work underway in East African countries to improve their quarterly GDP estimates.
