### Overview
- Hosted by the IMF in cooperation with JICA as part of the Initiative for Macroeconomists of the Future.
- The lectures provide an overview of how the IMF analyzes macroeconomic issues, including use of its financial programming tool.
- Real country case studies of IMF surveillance and program activities will be discussed.
- Participants undertake their own analysis of a country case in a group presentation using the tools introduced in the classroom.
- The IMF Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific described the program as a five-day online workshop targeting graduate students studying in Japan as well as overseas Japanese graduate students.

### Main Lecturer
- Main Lecturer: Jerry Schiff (PhD).
- Dr. Schiff currently teaches at American University.
- Previously, he was Deputy Director of the Asia and Pacific Department of the IMF and held a number of senior positions at the IMF.
- He is also a visiting professor at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Public Policy.

### Target audience and admission
- Target: Students on Master’s/ PhD degree programs who are interested in working for international organizations while developing expertise in macroeconomics, international finance, development economics, and related fields.
- Young scholars and undergraduate students can also apply.
- MAIN TARGET: Students pursuing Master’s /PhD.
- NO. TO BE ADMITTED: 20 (Participants will be selected through submitted applications).

### Learning objectives and content
- Overview of the IMF’s macroeconomic framework and financial programming tool to understand linkages between macroeconomic variables and to make projections that are internally consistent and sensible.
- Use of financial programming to identify macroeconomic risks and vulnerabilities and to develop policy recommendations.
- Introduction of simple tools for evaluating monetary and fiscal policy.
- IMF Surveillance: case study using a recent IMF staff report to explain surveillance, use of economic data to identify trends and risks, and development of policy recommendations.
- IMF-Supported Programs: case study of a recent program to illustrate program design and trade-offs.
- Group assignment: participants will use country data from IMF staff reports to diagnose a country’s prospects and risks and make policy recommendations; presentations involve discussion and feedback.
