### Program overview and objectives
- Hosted by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in cooperation with JICA.
- Purpose: Provide an overview of how the IMF analyzes macroeconomic issues and to give participants hands-on experience with IMF tools such as Financial Programming and Debt Sustainability Analysis.
- Format: Virtual workshop (via Zoom).
- Duration: Five-day online workshop conducted Tuesday, March 22 through Monday, March 28, 2022 (excl. Sat and Sun).
- Fee: Free.
- Language: Japanese (Note: Some materials written in English will be used).
- Target audience: Mainly undergraduate students; master’s students may also apply. The program targets those interested in working for international organizations and developing expertise in macroeconomics, international finance, development economics, and related fields.
- Certificate: A Certificate of Participation will be granted to participants who complete the workshop.

### Lecturer and instruction
- Lecturer: Shogo Ishii (PhD), IMF and JICA Consultant.
- Lecturer background (as presented): Previously Director of the IMF Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific; has held senior IMF positions including mission chief for Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam, and Senior Resident Representative in Thailand.
- Instructional approach: Lectures in Japanese, use of IMF analysis tools, real country case studies of IMF surveillance and program activities, and group presentations where participants undertake their own country analysis using introduced tools.

- Financial Programming:
  - Overview of the IMF's financial programming tool and how it is used to understand linkages between macroeconomic variables.
  - Use of financial programming to make projections that are consistent among sectors and sensible.
  - Role in identifying macroeconomic risks and vulnerabilities and developing policy recommendations.
- IMF macroeconomic framework and surveillance:
  - Role of the IMF in the international financial system.
  - How IMF economists work at Headquarters and in the field.
  - Ways the IMF analyzes macroeconomic developments and policies.
- Macroeconomic policy analysis:
  - Various macroeconomic policies, their main objectives, anticipated impacts, and constraints.
- Adjustment programs:
  - Assessing a country’s macroeconomic imbalances and formulating macroeconomic adjustment programs.
- COVID-19 and debt sustainability:
  - Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on a country’s economic conditions, prospects, and debt sustainability.
- IMF-supported programs:
  - Case Study of Egypt to illustrate roles, processes, trade-offs, and design considerations in IMF-supported programs.
