### Overview
- Hosted by the IMF in cooperation with JICA.
- Initiative for Macroeconomists of the Future.
- Main Lecturer: Jerry Schiff (PhD). Dr. Schiff currently teaches at George Washington University; previously he was Deputy Director of the Asia and Pacific Department of the IMF and held a number of senior positions at the IMF. He is also a visiting professor at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Public Policy.
- Content: Lectures provide an overview of how the IMF analyzes macroeconomic issues, including through the use of its financial programming tool. Real country case studies of IMF surveillance and program activities will be discussed. Students undertake their own analysis of a country case in the group presentation using the tools introduced in the classroom.
- Learning outcome: Participants who complete the workshop will be granted a Certificate of Participation.

### Target audience and objectives
- Target: Students on Master’s/ PhD degree programs interested in working for international organizations and developing expertise in macroeconomics, international finance, development economics, and related fields.
- Objectives:
  - Explain the role of the IMF in the international financial system and how an IMF economist works at Headquarters and in the field.
  - Present the IMF’s financial programming tool and illustrate its use to understand linkages between macroeconomic variables, make projections, and develop policy recommendations.
  - Apply financial programming tools to fiscal, monetary, and financial sector policy analysis.
  - Use country case studies to identify risks and vulnerabilities and to develop policy recommendations.
  - Prepare and present a group country-case analysis.

  - 14:45-16:15 B. Financial Programming I: The IMF’s macroeconomic framework — overview of IMF analysis and the financial programming tool.
  - 16:15-16:30 Coffee Break
  - 16:30-18:00 C. Financial Programming II: Fiscal policy — role of financial programming in identifying macroeconomic risks and developing fiscal policy recommendations.

  - 9:00-11:00 D. Financial Programming III: Monetary and financial sector policies — analysis of the monetary sector, evaluation tools for monetary and exchange rate policies, and macro-financial linkages and risks.

  - 11:15-12:45 E. IMF surveillance: The case of Turkey — use of the Turkey case to explain IMF surveillance and how financial programming analyzes a country’s economy; serves as basis for student presentations.

  - 9:00-10:30 I. IMF-Supported Programs: The case of Sri Lanka — discussion of the role and process behind an IMF-supported adjustment program using Sri Lanka as a case study to explore key concepts and trade-offs in program design.
