### Overview
- Hosted by the IMF in cooperation with JICA.
- Initiative for Macroeconomists of the Future.
- Main Lecturer: Jerry Schiff (PhD). Dr. Schiff is a former Deputy Director of the Asia and Pacific Department and Senior Advisor in the Office of the Managing Director at the IMF; he has taught courses at American University, George Washington University, and the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Public Policy.
- Content: Lectures provide an overview of how the IMF analyzes macroeconomic issues, including through the use of its financial programming tool. Real country case studies of IMF surveillance and program activities will be discussed. Students will undertake group presentations applying tools introduced in the classroom.

### Target audience and certification
- Target: Students on Master’s/ PhD degree programs interested in working for international organizations and developing expertise in macroeconomics, international finance, development economics, and related fields. Young scholars and undergraduate students can also apply.
- A Certificate of Participation will be granted to participants who complete this workshop.

### Key pedagogical themes and case studies
- The Role of the IMF: explanation of IMF’s role in the international financial system and how an IMF economist works at Headquarters and in the field.
- Financial Programming I–III: presentation of the IMF’s financial programming tool to understand linkages between macroeconomic variables, make projections and policy recommendations; application to fiscal policy and to monetary and financial sector policies, including simple tools for evaluating monetary and exchange rate policies and macro-financial linkages and risks.
- IMF Policy Advice: The case of Turkey — use of financial programming to analyze a country’s economy, identify risks and vulnerabilities, and develop policy recommendations; serves as basis for student presentations.
- IMF-Supported Programs: The case of Sri Lanka — discussion of the role and process behind an IMF-supported program, concrete examples of program concepts, and exploration of key trade-offs in program design.
- JICA presentation and practical group assignment work, including office hours and breakout sessions for preparation of group presentations.
