### Program overview and objectives
- The IMF Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific will hold the 24th Macroeconomist Training Program, a three day residential workshop mainly targeting graduate students studying in Japan.
- Purpose: To explore how the IMF uses its financial programming framework to analyze member country economic prospects and risks and to make policy recommendations.
- Format and venue:

- Target audience:
  - Students pursuing Master’s/PhD degree programs interested in working for international organizations and developing expertise in macroeconomics, international finance, development economics, and related fields.

### Main lecturer and instruction
- Main Lecturer: Jerry Schiff (PhD)
  - Former Deputy Director of the Asia and Pacific Department and Senior Advisor in the Office of the Managing Director at the IMF.
  - Has taught macroeconomics and economic policy at American University, George Washington University and the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Public Policy.
- Instructional focus:
  - Overview of how the IMF analyzes macroeconomic issues using the financial programming tool.
  - Real country case studies of IMF surveillance and program activities.
  - Hands-on group analysis and presentations using tools introduced in class.
- Certification:
  - A Certificate of Participation will be granted to participants who complete the workshop.

- The lectures and sessions will cover:
  - The Role of the IMF: the IMF in the international financial system and how IMF economists work at Headquarters and in the field.
  - Financial Programming I: The IMF’s macroeconomic framework — linkages between macroeconomic variables, projections, and policy recommendations.
  - Financial Programming II: Fiscal policy — identifying macroeconomic risks and vulnerabilities and developing fiscal policy recommendations.
  - Financial Programming III: Monetary and financial sector policies — tools for evaluating monetary and exchange rate policies and macro-financial linkages and risks.
  - IMF Policy Advice: The case of Turkey — using economic data to identify risks and vulnerabilities and develop policy recommendations; foundation for student presentations.
  - IMF-Supported Programs: The case of Sri Lanka — role and process of an IMF-supported program; trade-offs in program design.
  - Presentation by JICA.
  - Group assignments and office hours to prepare group presentations.
