This 3 day peer learning event is intended for officials from financial intelligence units (FIUs), law enforcement specializing in financial crime, and tax inspectors and investigators who seek a deeper understanding of the between national anti-money laundering (AML) frameworks and tax frameworks. Discussions will focus on developing and implementing national strategies to leverage these synergies and to enhance revenue enforcement and the detection and investigation of tax evasion and related money laundering.
Presented by the Legal Department, this peer learning event aims to highlight the value of tax information for FIUs and law enforcement agencies and the importance of financial intelligence and investigatory methods for tax authorities. Effective inter-agency collaboration can improve both tax compliance and enforcement efforts as well as detection and investigation of financial crimes.
The peer learning event will feature peer-to peer discussions on (i) enhancing the understanding of tax evasion and related money laundering risks and developing national strategies to mitigate those risks (ii) identifying potential barriers to co-operation and information sharing (iii) implementing operational measures to maximize co-operation and collaboration (iv) exploring key aspects of tax policy that can influence money laundering risks (e.g. voluntary tax compliance programs, collection of beneficial ownership information, tax information databases, identification numbers, international tax information exchange arrangements). Participants will prepare and present short presentations on their national frameworks and reforms in these areas.
