Global growth and short-term outlook
- Global growth in 2016 was 3.2 percent (the weakest since the global financial crisis).
- Global growth is projected to rise to 3.6 percent in 2017 and to 3.7 percent in 2018.
- The growth forecasts for both 2017 and 2018 are 0.1 percentage point stronger compared with projections earlier this year.
- Short-term risks are described as broadly balanced.
Regional revisions and relative performance
- Broad-based upward revisions were reported for:
- the euro area
- Japan
- emerging Asia
- emerging Europe
- Russia
- Downward revisions occurred for:
- the United States
- the United Kingdom
- The upward revisions reflected that growth outcomes in the first half of 2017 were better than expected in the listed regions.
Ongoing weaknesses and sectoral impacts
- Growth remains weak in many countries despite the strengthening baseline outlook.
- Inflation is below target in most advanced economies.
- Commodity exporters—especially fuel exporters—are particularly hard hit as they adjust to a sharp step down in foreign earnings.
Medium-term risks and policy window
- Medium-term risks remain tilted to the downside.
- The cyclical pickup in global activity provides an opportunity to:
- boost potential output
- ensure the benefits of growth are broadly shared
- build resilience against downside risks
- A renewed multilateral effort is recommended to address common challenges in an integrated global economy.
