Innovation’s Unseen Frontier

Thesis: Democratizing access to careers in innovation can harness untapped talent, spur economic growth, and narrow inequalities.
Central concepts: "Lost Einsteins" and "Lost Marie Curies" (phrases coined with Alex Bell, Raj Chetty, Neviana Petkova, and John Van Reenen, 2019).
Claim: Democratizing innovation could yield macroeconomic gains comparable in importance to major technological revolutions while delivering greater inclusivity.

Key findings from US patent data (1996–2012):
- Among those whose parents’ earnings fell below the 80th percentile, there were fewer than four inventors for each thousand people.
- For individuals whose parents were in the top 20 percent of earners, there were as many as eight patent holders among each thousand people.
- Among children who scored at the 90th percentile or higher on third-grade math tests, those whose parents were in the top 20 percent of earners grew up to include more than twice as many patent holders as those from families with lower incomes.
Nonfinancial channels:
- Parental transmission of knowledge and aspirations, role models in childhood.
- Evidence from Finland (Philippe Aghion et al., 2017): universal, free education from kindergarten through doctoral studies still showed disparities in access to innovation comparable in magnitude to US disparities, implying sociological factors matter beyond financial constraints.

Productivity and growth impacts:
- Gender parity in access to careers in innovation could boost productivity growth by 70 percent (model by Elias Einio, Josh Feng, and Xavier Jaravel, 2023).
- For high-income countries such as the United States, this would translate into an annual increase in productivity growth of 2.0 to 3.4 percent (Chart 2).
- Providing equal opportunities for all individuals in the top 1 percent of the skill distribution, regardless of family background, could increase GDP growth rates by 55 percent.
Distributional emphasis:
- Bringing the highest-ability children into innovation careers would account for most of the economic gains.

Innovators’ experiences shape the problems they choose to solve, influencing which sociodemographic groups benefit.
Historical and contemporary examples:
- Josephine Cochrane (late 19th century) invented the dishwashing machine to protect fine china.
- Christopher Gray created the scholarship app Scholly drawing on his experience as the son of a struggling single mother.
- Female entrepreneurs driving "femtech" to address women’s health needs.
Sectoral patterns:
- Innovators from high-income families are more likely to develop products aimed at high-income consumers and to avoid industries catering to basic needs (for example, food), favoring sectors such as finance.
- Similar patterns apply across gender and age, contributing to purchasing-power disparities across consumer groups.

Exposure and role models:
- Childhood proximity to inventors increases likelihood of becoming an inventor (Bell et al., 2019).
- Randomized controlled trials and studies show mentoring programs and brief exposure to female role models significantly influence career choices:
- Breda et al. (2023) find brief exposure to female scientific role models significantly influences high school girls’ choices of undergraduate majors, with a particularly strong effect on high-achieving 12th-grade girls who are more likely to enroll in selective, male-dominated STEM programs in college.
Targeted funding and programs:
- Dedicated funding programs could bridge talent gaps by gender and socioeconomic background.
Education and diffusion:
- A more inclusive education system accelerates diffusion of existing innovations by raising adoption capability across the workforce.
- Elio Nimier-David (Cornell University, 2023): creation of new colleges in France during the 1990s expanded access to education and resulted in increased new business formation.
International talent and low-income countries:
- Agarwal et al. (2023) suggest lowering immigration barriers and expanding scholarships for top foreign students from developing economies to democratize access internationally.

2,400-year-old proverb referenced regarding necessity vs. opportunity.
42 percent: Potential increase in scientific output of future generations worldwide if talented youth everywhere had equal opportunities (Ruchir Agarwal, Ina Ganguli, Patrick Gaule, and Geoff Smith, 2023).
1996–2012: Time span of US Patent and Trademark Office data analyzed.
80th percentile: Parental earnings threshold referenced in patent-holder incidence.
fewer than four inventors for each thousand people: incidence for children whose parents’ earnings fell below the 80th percentile.
top 20 percent: parental-earnings group with as many as eight patent holders among each thousand people.
90th percentile: high-achieving third-grade math score threshold used in comparison.
2017: year of Philippe Aghion–led Finland study showing disparities despite free universal education.
70 percent: projected boost in productivity growth from gender parity in innovation access (Einio, Feng, Jaravel, 2023).
2.0 to 3.4 percent: annual increase in productivity growth for high-income countries such as the United States under gender parity scenario.
top 1 percent: skill-distribution segment where equal opportunity could increase GDP growth rates by 55 percent.
55 percent: potential increase in GDP growth rates from equal opportunities for top 1 percent of skill distribution.
2019, 2023, 2023, 2023: years of cited research advancing the evidence base.
