### Overview
- The IMF serves as a global hub for knowledge on economic and financial issues and shares this knowledge with government institutions such as finance ministries and central banks.
- Capacity development ranges from support on specific policy issues (for example, helping Liberia establish a more modern and professional tax administration) to holistic capacity development that may include providing a resident specialist based in-country (for example, working with Myanmar to provide a broad range of fiscal, monetary, legal and statistical support).
- A global network of seventeen Regional Capacity Development Centers (RCDCs) and training programs enables delivery of the IMF's capacity development work—training and technical assistance—to member countries in their regional context whenever needed.
- A regional approach is intended to:
  - respond quickly to countries' emerging needs;
  - coordinate more closely with other development partners on the ground;
  - foster regional integration;
  - encourage peer-to-peer learning;
  - better tailor advice and training.
- Activities are complemented by global thematic funds focusing on core areas of the IMF's expertise.
- The regional centers are financed jointly by the IMF, external development partners, and member countries.

### Network composition and partners
- The network comprises seventeen centers and training programs. Partners and hosts vary by center and include bilateral donors, multilateral partners, and host countries.
- Partners represent signed agreements, donor-approved allocations, and phase rollovers as of April 30, 2026.
- On March 26, 2026, the IMF announced the intention to create a new regional capacity development center in Rome, Italy—the Southeast Europe Technical Assistance Center (SEETAC), scheduled to begin operations by January 2027.
- Updated June 2026.
