### Overview and mandate
- The International Monetary Fund’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (OAP) is an outpost in a dynamic region of 37 member economies.
- Established in 1997 to facilitate policy dialogue and capacity development in Asia as a peer-to-peer learning center.
- Contributes to regional surveillance under the Asia-Pacific Department and communicates the Fund’s message to the region.

### Regional engagement and partnerships
- Asia is characterized as “the engine for global growth over the past decade and an innovation powerhouse” and can help strengthen the international monetary system and global financial safety net.
- Partnership with Japan: IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva visited Japan in March 2026, meeting government and central bank leaders and delivering a keynote address at a symposium; the visit reaffirmed the partnership between the IMF and Japan.
- The Office facilitates policy dialogue among policymakers in the region and supports high-level policy discussions and engagement in regional fora.
- Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Asia (JISPA) is part of capacity development efforts.

### Capacity development, training, and outreach
- The Office acts as a leading peer-to-peer learning center and hosts the Macroeconomist Training Program; student feedback includes: “I was impressed to realize that I could make my own inferences to some extent from the macroeconomics data after the program.”
- Capacity development centers have been established in the region to strengthen member countries’ policymaking capacity.
- Public outreach includes hosting public seminars, joining public events, promoting career opportunities, and communicating IMF messages via various channels (VIDEOS: IMF Videos | Facebook Videos; IMF Currency Quiz; IMF Quiz (English)).

### Staffing and recruitment
- The Office has both internationally and locally recruited staff.
- Local job openings, including internships, are posted; Communications Intern applications are accepted year-round and reviewed as needed. Application window for this summer's internship has closed.
- For international job openings, candidates are directed to IMF recruitment channels.

### Surveillance and analytical role
- The Office contributes to regional surveillance by monitoring and analyzing economic developments in the region.
- It supports dissemination of IMF flagship publications relevant to the region, including: World Economic Outlook; Global Financial Stability Report; Fiscal Monitor; Regional Economic Outlooks (Asia & Pacific among others); and Finance & Development.
