### Public Advisory: Fraudulent Scam Letters
- The IMF warns that several variants of financial scam letters purporting to be sanctioned by the International Monetary Fund or authored by high ranking IMF officials are currently in circulation.
- Characteristics of the scams:
  - May appear on official letterhead containing the IMF logo.
  - Instruct recipients to contact the IMF for issuance of a “Certificate of International Capital Transfer” or other approvals to enable receiving large sums of monies as beneficiaries.
  - Contact e-mail information is always BOGUS.
  - Scammers request personal banking details which are then used for fraudulent activities.
- Guidance: For more information refer to Fraudulent Scam Emails Using the Name of the IMF.

### Research Note: Departmental African Paper Series
