### Overview
- Launched in 2009 in response to increasing fiscal challenges after the global financial crisis.
- The Fiscal Monitor surveys and analyzes the latest public finance developments, updates fiscal implications of the crisis and medium-term fiscal projections, and assesses policies to put public finances on a sustainable footing.
- Starting with this issue, the Monitor is part of the IMF's World Economic and Financial Surveys series, complementing the World Economic Outlook (WEO) and the Global Financial Stability Report (GFSR).
- Prepared twice a year by the IMF's Fiscal Affairs Department.

### Purpose and Scope
- Multilateral surveillance of fiscal developments is emphasized as a key IMF surveillance responsibility.
- The Monitor's objectives:
  - Survey and analyze public finance developments.
  - Update fiscal implications of the crisis and medium-term fiscal projections.
  - Assess policies to restore sustainability of public finances.

### Preparation and Methodology
- The Monitor's projections are based on the same database used for the April 2010 WEO and GFSR.
