### Chapter 2 — Hedge Funds and Financial Stability: key findings
- Hedge funds have become increasingly important participants in global financial markets while remaining relatively small within nonbank finance.
- Global hedge fund assets now total about $13 trillion, more than three times their 2013 level.
- Hedge funds face relatively few constraints on investment strategies and borrowing, enabling rapid adjustment of exposures across markets.
- In calm times, hedge funds can:
  - Support market liquidity
  - Improve price discovery
  - Facilitate risk sharing
- In periods of stress, vulnerabilities include:
  - Leverage-driven pressures
  - Crowded positions
  - Correlated investor redemptions leading to synchronized deleveraging and asset sales
  - Increased volatility and strains on market liquidity
  - Spillovers to prime brokers and magnified global risk shocks in markets with larger hedge fund footprints, especially where liquidity is thin

### Policy implications and recommendations from Chapter 2
- Strengthen data collection for systemwide risk assessments to better capture hedge fund footprints and linkages.
- Design prudential measures calibrated to the nature and source of hedge fund vulnerabilities.
- Complement prudential measures with credible central bank backstops to address severe dysfunctions in core markets.

### Event speakers for Chapter 2 discussion
- Discussant: Prof. Christian Lundblad, UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School
- Andrea Deghi, Senior Financial Sector Expert, MCM, IMF
- Taneli Mäkinen, Senior Financial Sector Expert, MCM, IMF
