IMF SEMINAR EVENT
DATE: October 6, 2015
DAY: Tuesday
3:30 PM - 5:00 PM
LOCATION: National Theatre
Overview
Unemployment remains high in many countries, with youth making up about 40 percent of the world’s unemployed. A major contributing factor to youth unemployment is the accessibility, quality, and relevance of education, including vocational training. Added to that is widespread gender inequity in education, which hiders youth development, and with it, hinders access to jobs. At the same time, in the case of Latin America and the Caribbean, six out of ten jobs available to young people are in the informal economy. These jobs offer low wages and, in general, are of poor quality.
The session brings in youth leaders from around the world to share their views and personal experience on the role education plays in addressing youth unemployment and on how to bring in more youth into the formal sector, which offers better career prospects, social protection and access to labor rights.
