The IMF's Security Services protect the institution's employees, facilities and information, both at the Washington, DC, headquarters buildings and internationally, by identifying and mitigating security risks, maintaining safe and secure workplaces, and responding to events that pose a threat.

International security services for the IMF involve:

  • Responding to crises and emergencies overseas involving Fund personnel or property
  • Compiling and analyzing security data, and assessing events that may threaten the safety of staff
  • Providing briefings to mission teams and disseminating security information to departments and field offices
  • Evaluating physical security arrangements for the offices and residences of resident representatives (Fund economists who live and work in member countries) and IMF experts in the field

Headquarters security services consist of:

  • Planning and overseeing the physical security of Fund personnel, visitors, and property
  • Managing a 130-person contract security officer force, a 24-hour Global Security Operations Center, and an executive protection unit
  • Investigating vehicle accidents, criminal activity, and injury incidents involving Fund personnel
  • Working closely with national and local law enforcement and intelligence agencies on Fund security related matters
