IMF Calls Tokyo Meeting to Discuss Thai Financing Package

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has convened a meeting of a number of interested countries and multilateral institutions in Tokyo on Monday, August 11 to discuss their possible participation in a financing package for Thailand to support the stabilization program now being discussed with the IMF. Michel Camdessus, Managing Director of the IMF, said on August 5 the IMF was working with the Thai authorities to develop the measures just announced by the Government of Thailand into a multi-year adjustment program that can be supported by IMF resources, and that he was in touch with interested governments and multilateral institutions to put together a supplementary financing package in support of Thailand’s policy efforts (See News Brief 97/16).
