Legal Aspects of International Financial Institutions (LAIF)
This course, presented by the Legal Department, covers legal, institutional, and operational features of IFIs (primarily the IMF and the World Bank), and explores the linkages between these institutions and their members. Institutions to be covered each year may vary.
Target Audience
Lawyers, senior lawyers, and other professionals from central banks, ministries of finance and of justice, and other agencies primarily in emerging market countries with responsibilities related to legal aspects of relations with international financial institutions (IFIs).
Qualifications
Participants are expected to have five years of relevant work experience and preferably a law degree. Attendance is by invitation only. Prerequisites are specified in the nomination request letters.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
- Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the history, purposes, governance, structure, and functions of the IMF, the World Bank, and other IFIs and their relationship with their member countries.
- Contribute more effectively to the interactions between member countries and IFIs such as the IMF and the World Bank.
- Identify challenges and trends that IFIs now face.
- Draw lessons to help member countries prepare more effective and responsive policy instruments and legal frameworks, and to foster more balanced economic growth.
