IMF Staff Concludes Visit to Kenya

IMF staff team led by Haimanot Teferra visited Nairobi from September 25-October 9, 2025.
Purpose: to assess Kenya’s current economic situation and initiate discussions on the government’s forward-looking policies and strategy that could be supported through an IMF program.

- H.E. President Ruto.
- Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi Ng’ongo.
- Governor Kamau Thugge of the Central Bank of Kenya.
- Respective teams of the above officials.
Additional engagements with:
- Members of Parliament.
- Officials from various government agencies.
- Representatives from civil society organizations.
- Private businesses and the financial sector.
- Development partners.

The IMF team made progress in:
- Taking stock of the latest macroeconomic and financial sector developments.
- Assessing the economic outlook.
- Holding initial discussions with Kenyan authorities and other stakeholders on a reform agenda that could pave the way for an IMF-supported program.
Emphasis placed on enhancing fiscal policy credibility, ensuring sustainability of public finances and debt, and minimizing fiscal, financial, and external sector risks.
Importance highlighted of enhancing governance, transparency, and efficiency in the public sector.

The team will return to Washington, D.C. to further its technical work.
Discussions with the authorities will continue during the upcoming IMF Annual Meetings.

IMF welcomed the Kenyan authorities’ candid engagement.
IMF reaffirmed commitment to partnering with Kenya to secure a more robust, sustainable, and inclusive economic future for all Kenyans.
IMF thanked the authorities and partners for their hospitality and constructive discussions during the visit.
