Silvana Tenreyro

Silvana Tenreyro is Economic Counsellor and Director of the Research Department at the International Monetary Fund. In this role, she serves as the IMF's Chief Economist and leads the Fund's analytical and research work on the global economy.

Prior to joining the IMF, Ms. Tenreyro was the James E. Meade Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), where she had been a member of the faculty since 2004. Her research has focused on macroeconomics, monetary economics, international economics, trade, and economic growth, and has been published in leading academic journals. She has served in several leadership positions in the economics profession, including as President of the European Economic Association.

Ms. Tenreyro brings extensive policymaking experience to the Fund. She served as an external member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee from 2017 to 2023 and previously worked as an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and as a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Mauritius. She is a Fellow of the British Academy and the Econometric Society, and a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Economic Association. Her work has been recognized with numerous international awards, including the Yrjö Jahnsson Award, the Birgit Grodal Award, the Carl Menger Prize in Monetary Macroeconomics, and the Bernhard Harms Prize. In 2024, she was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), a prestigious UK honor recognizing her contributions to the field of economics.

Born and raised in Tucumán, Argentina, Ms. Tenreyro received a B.A. in Economics from the National University of Tucumán and earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University. She holds Argentine, British, and Italian citizenship.
