Context: Special issue on climate in partnership with the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26)
Central framing: Climate change is progressing "gradually, then suddenly"—damage is becoming less gradual and could reach an irreversible tipping point without rapid action.

The climate problem is "much worse than we once thought" and requires "radical overhaul" rather than incremental change.
Required emissions trajectory: "roughly halving carbon emissions each decade through 2050."
Technical and market conditions: Cheaper renewable energy and technology advances make a move from carbon "affordable and feasible."
Transition challenges highlighted:
- Need to rapidly shift to renewables.
- Need to build new electricity networks.
- Need to increase energy efficiency.
- Need to embrace low-carbon transport.
- Political economy impediments to rapid progress.
- Necessity to compensate workers and businesses that bear transition costs.

Cross-sector voices: academics, policymakers, private sector, youth activists.
Concrete solutions and emphases from contributors:
- Amar Bhattacharya and Nicholas Stern: identify concrete solutions that can generate massive opportunities for jobs and growth through stepped-up infrastructure investment and technological innovation supported by a dynamic private sector.
- Kristalina Georgieva (IMF): recommends credible carbon pricing policies to encourage the use of green energy.
- James Stock (Harvard): advocates a shift to sector-specific policies, such as low-carbon aviation fuel.
- Mark Carney (UN special envoy for climate action and finance): argues private finance can help turn "the billions of public money into trillions of total climate investment" and proposes ways to scale clean and green financial flows to emerging and developing countries.
- Isabel Schnabel (European Central Bank): suggests ways for central banks to act as catalysts for a more sustainable financial system.
- Aminath Shauna (Maldives Environment Minister): describes a holistic approach to adaptation, from preserving coral reefs to improving waste management.
Country vignettes:
- Dominica: pursuing innovative ways to cope with climate mitigation.
- Finland: pursuing innovative ways to cope with climate adaptation.

Mobilize finance to help developing economies adapt to climate shocks.
Scale private finance and public instruments to convert "billions of public money into trillions of total climate investment."
Implement credible carbon pricing to shift incentives toward green energy.
Deploy sector-specific policies where appropriate (example: low-carbon aviation fuel).
Strengthen infrastructure investment and support technological innovation to create jobs and growth.
Design compensatory measures for workers and businesses affected by the green transition.
Enhance collaboration across citizens, governments, corporations, financial institutions, philanthropists, and the scientific community.
Expand world leaders' ambition and action to meet the required emissions trajectory and avoid tipping points.

The issue emphasizes that a rapid, ambitious transition could become "the inclusive growth story of the 21st century."
Cultural note: The magazine cover by young Malaysian artist Nor Tijan Firdaus—an image of a young girl composed of discarded electronic components—is highlighted as a forceful reminder of human impacts on the environment and the urgency to act.
Closing message: "Indeed, we have no time to waste."
