Patrizia Tumbarello

Patrizia Tumbarello is Deputy Director of the IMF’s Fiscal Affairs Department, where she oversees expenditure policy and public finance capacity development for Francophone and Lusophone Africa. Previously, she served in the Western Hemisphere Department as IMF Mission Chief for Ecuador—one of the IMF’s largest financial programs—and for Haiti, one of its most fragile members. She also coordinated capacity development and work on fragile states and low-income countries in the department. She has held managerial roles across the IMF, including in the Statistics Department, where she led the IMF’s first data and statistics strategy and data standards initiatives, and in the Asia and Pacific Department, where she worked extensively on Australia and small states. Her research covers macroeconomic resilience; challenges facing low-income countries and fragile states, including correspondent banking; fiscal frameworks; trade integration; vulnerabilities in corporate, banking, and household balance sheets; and more recently, big data, data transparency, and governance. She holds a B.A. from the University of Rome La Sapienza and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Rome Tor Vergata, and pursued part of her graduate studies at Harvard University.
