Target Audience
The course is targeted at staff from National Central Banks, National Statistics Offices and other agencies that are directly involved in the compilation of balance of payments and international investment position statistics (also called ESS). Participants should have a basic knowledge of ESS concepts and be familiar with the data sources used in the compilation of ESS in their country.

Course Description
The in person external sector statistics (ESS) training course program consists of a mix of lectures on the concepts and methods of, and best international practices in collecting and compiling, ESS and workshops with practical exercises. The program includes a pre- and a post-course quiz, lectures and workshops with practical exercises, and sessions where countries will share their experiences in collecting and compiling ESS to facilitate peer to-peer learning.
Course Objectives
The main purpose of the course will be to assist participants in building their capacity to produce high quality balance of payments and IIP with a thorough understanding of the conceptual framework of ESS and to provide practical guidance for addressing current collection and compilation challenges as well as for recording of specific transactions and positions. The course will also introduce the seventh edition of the Integrated Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Manual (BPM7) (white cover) which will be released in March 2025. Participants will also have the opportunity to share country experiences and discuss areas of further development.
