- Multiple variants of financial scam letters are circulating that purport to be sanctioned by the IMF or authored by high ranking IMF officials; some use official letterhead containing the IMF logo.

- Instructions to contact the sender for issuance of a “Certificate of International Capital Transfer” or other approvals to receive large sums.
- Contact e-mail information is bogus; victims are requested to send personal banking details which scammers then exploit.
- Clarifications about IMF operations:
- The IMF does NOT authorize, verify, monitor, or assist in contract or inheritance payments between third parties and/or Governments.
- The IMF does NOT endorse the activities of any bank, financial institution, or other public or private agency.
- The IMF is an inter-governmental organization whose transactions and operations are carried out directly with its member countries.
- Recommended actions for suspected scam victims:
- Terminate all further contacts with the scammers.
- If funds have been sent, contact local law enforcement immediately.
- If resident in the United States, victims can file a complaint with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) via http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx.
