Methodology
- Uses a modified version of the methodology employed by the IMF's Consultative Group on Exchange Rate Issues (CGER) to calculate equilibrium current account balances (or “norms”).
- Sample: 33 emerging market economies.
- Also provides estimates for eleven smaller emerging market economies not included in the CGER country sample.
Key Findings
- The fundamental determinants of the equilibrium current account balances for the emerging market sample are similar to those identified by the CGER when its sample includes advanced economies.
- The fiscal balance has a considerably stronger impact on current account norms for emerging markets compared with the CGER findings for mixed samples of advanced and emerging economies.
