Visiting Japan twice in May, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva renewed the Fund’s commitment to uphold the rule-based multilateral system and jointly tackle a range of global economic challenges to achieve sustainable and inclusive global growth at the G7 Finance Ministers and Governors Meeting in Niigata and the G7 Summit in Hiroshima.
During these meetings, she participated in a series of sessions to address Russia’s war in Ukraine, climate change, risks to financial stability and issues in international taxation in Niigata, and joined two sessions in Hiroshima to discuss multiple crises such as food insecurity, pandemic and gender inequality, and global efforts for a sustainable planet, followed by a visit to the Hiroshima Memorial Park with Japan’ Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Apart from these sessions, she also held a series of bilateral meetings with finance ministers from India and Brazil in Niigata and heads of state from Indonesia, Brazil and Vietnam in Hiroshima to discuss more country-specific issues.
She also took advantage of these opportunities to appreciate the local heritage and culture of the host cities in Japan.
