Fraud advisory: Several variants of financial scam letters purporting to be sanctioned by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or authored by high ranking IMF officials are currently in circulation.
Scam mechanics described:
- Scam letters may appear on official letterhead containing the IMF logo.
- They instruct potential victims to contact the IMF for issuance of a “Certificate of International Capital Transfer” or other approvals to enable receipt of large sums of money.
- Contact e-mail information provided by scammers is always BOGUS and victims are requested to send personal banking details that scammers then use for fraudulent activities.
