Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Asia (JISPA)
This video provides an overview of the academic environment and student experience at the Orientation Program hosted at the International University of Japan, featuring interviews conducted in commemoration of the 30th Anniversary of the Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Asia (JISPA).
Before beginning their master’s studies, all newly accepted JISPA scholars are required to fully participate in the Orientation Program (OP)—an intensive academic and cultural preparation held at the International University of Japan in Niigata. The program is designed to facilitate a smooth transition into graduate studies and life in Japan by offering foundational courses in academic English, mathematics, introductory econometrics and economics, and Japanese language. In addition to academic preparation, the program includes lectures on cross-cultural understanding and Japan’s modernization, complemented by a field trip to deepen contextual learning. Scholars also attend lectures by IMF staff to learn about the Fund’s role and operations. To further enrich the OP experience, the host institution organizes a variety of extracurricular activities to foster camaraderie among incoming scholars.
Participation in the OP is mandatory for all newly accepted JISPA scholars.

The Orientation Program is conducted at the International University of Japan in Niigata.
Note: In light of the Orientation Program’s unique residential learning environment, which combines intensive academic preparation with opportunities for community building and peer engagement among the incoming scholar cohort, scholars are requested not to bring family members during the OP. Scholars must obtain prior approval from their respective universities to bring family after the OP.
