Ilan Goldfajn

Ilan Goldfajn was elected president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) on November 20, 2022, and took office on December 19, 2022. He previously served as director of the Western Hemisphere Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 2022, where he supported countries in implementing IMF programs and contributed to climate change policy dialogue. Earlier, he was an economist at the IMF from 1996 to 1999.

Mr. Goldfajn also served as governor (2016-2019) and deputy governor (2000-2003) of the Banco Central do Brasil, where he led significant reforms that reduced inflation and interest rates, promoted financial innovation, and increased inclusion. His private-sector experience includes roles at Itaú Unibanco, Ciano Investimentos, Gávea Investimentos, and Credit Suisse Brazil.

He has taught economics at various universities in Brazil and the United States. He has worked as an editor of various publications, as well as written and published numerous articles and books. Mr. Goldfajn holds a PhD in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a master’s degree in economics from the Pontifíca Universidade Católica and a bachelor’s degree in economics from the Universidade Federal, both in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
