Alain Coune was the Director of the Office of Internal Audit and Inspection from March 2003 to November 2005.

Mr. Coune studied law at the Nantes School of Law and Economics where he obtained a licence en droit privé cum laude in 1971.

In 1970, Mr. Coune joined the Banque de France as a management trainee. He became Inspecteur de la Banque de France in 1974 and thereafter assumed the functions of internal auditor and bank examiner.

Mr. Coune joined the Central Banking Department of the IMF in 1980, where he provided advice on bank supervision matters. He then moved to the IMF Budget and Planning Office before joining the Information System Group. Mr. Coune joined the Office of Internal Audit and Inspection in 1992 as the number two and, apart from a short stay in the Finance Department where he participated in the assessments of controls in central banks, was overseeing the internal audit function since then.

A French national, Mr. Coune was born in 1949.
