Press Release: Shigemitsu Sugisaki Reappointed IMF Deputy Managing Director

    Mr. Horst Köhler, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), announced today the reappointment of Mr. Shigemitsu Sugisaki as Deputy Managing Director to a four-year term beginning on February 2, 2002. The Managing Director's recommendation was approved by the IMF's 24-member Executive Board.

    Mr. Sugisaki, a national of Japan, began a five-year term on February 3, 1997 (see Press Release No. 97/6). He joined the IMF in August 1994 as a Special Advisor to then Managing Director Michel Camdessus after holding a range of senior positions with Japan's Ministry of Finance.

    In addition to overseeing the Fund's relations with a number of countries, the Deputy Managing Director's responsibilities include budget and planning, internal organization, and the IMF's financial structure and treasury operations.
