The Economist Program (EP) is a three-year rotational program for PhD economists. You’ll gain hands-on experience across the IMF’s work—from country missions to policy research.
From day one, you’ll apply your research and analytical skills to real-world challenges that shape the global economy and impact our 191 member countries.
Program at a glance
The Economist Program gives you a well-rounded experience of the IMF’s work and a strong foundation for a long-term career as an economist.
You’ll rotate across departments, contributing to country surveillance, policy analysis, and research on issues such as fiscal, monetary, financial, and external sector issues.
- Eligibility: Recent PhD in economics or related field
- Age restriction: Under 34 at the time of entry
- Application window: Opens in September
- Outcome: Continued career as an IMF economist
The work: from country missions to global policy
As an EP, you’ll contribute across the IMF’s core work:
Country work
Work on IMF Article IV consultations and country programs—analyzing economic development and advising member countries.
Policy advice
Contribute to IMF advice on fiscal, monetary, financial, debt, and external sector issues.
Research
Contribute to research and analytical work that informs flagship publications and policy decisions.
