Press Release: IMF Managing Director Welcomes Ban Ki-moon as Incoming Secretary-General of the United Nations

    Mr. Rodrigo de Rato, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), issued the following statement on the election of Mr. Ban Ki-moon as Secretary-General of the United Nations:

    "I congratulate Mr. Ban Ki-moon on his election as Secretary-General of the United Nations. His broad experience and distinguished career will bring renewed energy and determination to achieving the objectives of the United Nations. We welcome his appointment to this very important position.

    "I would also like to express my deep appreciation of Mr. Kofi Annan for his great efforts and contribution over the past decade. I have enjoyed a fruitful partnership with Mr. Kofi Annan as we worked together on addressing the many challenges facing the developing world. His leadership of the United Nations has been inspiring.

    "The IMF's partnership with the United Nations towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals has been an important part of its work, and I look forward to continuing this steadfast cooperation with Mr. Ban Ki-moon."
