11th Annual Richard Goode Lecture: Making Labor Markets Work for Workers and Businesses

IMF Headquarters, Washington, DC

November 4, 2025

The International Monetary Fund held its eleventh annual Richard Goode Lecture on November 4, 2025. The Richard Goode Lecture is an annual event hosted by the Fiscal Affairs Department for leading academics to present their cutting-edge research on topical policy issues before a broad audience of policymakers, thinktanks, and staff of international organizations.

The lecture, titled “Making Labor Markets Work for Workers and Businesses,” was delivered by Professor Alexandra Roulet. The presentation was explored how thoughtfully designed labor market policies can safeguard workers while fostering business growth. It also explored the broader implications of AI adoption on employment prospects for younger and future generations.

Professor Roulet is an Associate Professor of Economics at INSEAD, specializing in labor economics. Her research has been published in top-tier academic journals, including the American Economic Review, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, and the Journal of Public Economics. She is a CEPR Research Fellow in the Labor group and co-directs the CEPR Research Policy Network on “Growth, Innovation, and Social Model in Europe” alongside Professor Philippe Aghion. From June 2022 to September 2023, she served as an economic advisor to French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne. Currently, she is a member of the French Council of Economic Analysis and of the Pension Surveillance Committee. Professor Roulet was co-recipient of the Upjohn Institute Dissertation Award in 2017 and was honored with the Best Young French Economist Award in 2024. She graduated from the École Normale Supérieure in Paris and earned her PhD in Economics at Harvard University in 2017.
