Summary
Niger continues to grapple with fragility, conflict, and vulnerability to climate shocks. The withdrawal of countries of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) became effective on January 29, 2025. Nevertheless, ECOWAS opted to maintain membership privileges for Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger until the modalities of future engagement are determined. The National Assemblies concluded in March 2025 proposed a five-year transition to democratic governance in Niger.
